Stage 3, Second semester project
Lichen Tower is a proposal for the redevelopment of the Hoburn gate house site in to create a new social housing block in the city of Aberdeen. Within this design the aim was to combat three main objectives: the social issues that come with elderly living on their own, the environmental impact that is facing out cities such as air quality etc. and the community issues that aberdeen faces due to recent economic downfall. First of all i aim to combat the challenges that the elderly are faced with within a city such as loneliness by creating a 11 story tower that houses 4 to 5 flats per floor. Doing this creating a vertical neighborhood in which a community is formed, this is done by encouraging encounters through the mundane tasks that one does every day. creating stairwells that cause others to pass as well as a social cafe area on the ground floor that will encourage residents to dine out width their accommodation. As well as the inclusion of winter gardens throughout the tower that act as multi purpose community rooms. The community this design looks to tackle is the ever growing reliance on food banks within the city. Since the oil crisis of 2015/16 many families have had their income stripped from them with very short notice. Research on it shows that food banks provide an important service which i feel should be grown within the city. Ecologically the main issue the design tackles the increasing problem of poor air quality within our cities. With London council recently letting out report of the air becoming almost as bad are it was in victorian times it become apparent that this is an issue our cities need to face head on. This design does so with the use of newly developed concrete panels that promote natural organism growth such as micro-algie, moss and the towers name sake, lichens that are very high CO2 absorbers. This is made even more important as the site is right next to a bust road area, so it would be facing the problem at one of the sources.
